THE FIRST WAY WAS A LADDER LINE INTO THE SHACK TO THE MFJ 993B WIDE RANGE ANTENNA TUNER. THAT WORKED WELL, BUT I HAD RADIO FREQUENCY INTERFERENCE RFI. SO, I ADDED A 4 1 BALUN OUTSIDE THE SHACK ABOUT HALFWAY TO THE FEED POINT, WITH RG 213 COAX TO THE BALUN AND WINDOW LINE THE REST OF THE WAY. I GOT A VERY STURDY BALUN DESIGNS MODEL 4124T AT THE ANTENNAS FEED POINT, AND RG 213 COAX < QST DE W1AW = RUNNING DOWN TO THE STATION. THIS ELIMINATED ALMOST ALL RFI PROBLEMS AND GAVE ME ACCEPTABLE PERFORMANCE. AT THE TIME, I HAD AN OLD BUTTERNUT HF 9V VERTICAL MULTI BAND ANTENNA THAT NEEDED SERIOUS RESTORATION. I INSTALLED IT AT GROUND LEVEL WITH 15 RADIALS OF VARIOUS LENGTHS. I STRUGGLED TO GET IT TUNED, BUT ONCE IT WAS UP, I FOUND IT PERFORMED MUCH BETTER THAN THE MULTI BAND HORIZONTAL LOOP ANTENNA.
