ARRL In Action: What Have We Been Up to Lately?

This feature -- including convenient Web links to useful information -- is a concise monthly update of some of the things ARRL is doing on behalf of its members. This installment covers the month of August.

The ARRL HQ Emergency Response Team was activated to help monitor various nets and provide support to the affected Field Organizations from W1AW, the Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Station.

ARRL members in the Atlantic, Dakota, Delta, Great Lakes and Midwest Divisions have nominated candidates for Director and Vice Director. Ballots will be counted on November 18 at ARRL Headquarters.

The ARRL -- together with researchers from the University of Southern California and Rutgers University -- helped solve interference problems caused by CODAR on 60 meters.

The International Amateur Radio Union’s (IARU) Administrative Council held its annual meeting in conjunction with the IARU Region 1 meeting in Sun City South Africa. The ARRL serves as the IARU International Secretariat.

The ARRL filed comments with the FCC in response to a Waiver Request from the Anchorage VEC.

The ARRL offered five sessions of its Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology this summer.

The ARRL VEC facilitated a remote exam session via video feed from Hawaii’s Kalaupapa Peninsula on the Island of Molokai.

The list of Logs Received for the 2011 ARRL Field Day has been posted online.

The ARRL Second Century Campaign Committee met in Newington.

The ARRL announced that the 30th Annual ARRL/TAPR Digital Communications Conference will take place September 16-18 in Baltimore.

Amazon.com is now offering ARRL’s General Class Q&A on its popular Kindle platform.

The ARRL Volunteer Examiner Coordinator team attended the annual National Conference of Volunteer Examiner Coordinators meeting in Gettysburg.

Section News: Incumbent Section Managers in Georgia and Western Washington were re-elected to new terms.

A new QuickStats poll was made available on the ARRL website.

The winner of the QST Cover Plaque Award for August 2011 is Doug Hall, K4DSP, for his article “The FSKit -- A Simple Sound Card Interface for Generating Radioteletype Frequency Shift Keying.”

The October issue of QST and the September/October editions of NCJ and QEX were released to the printer. The 2012 ARRL Handbook and the 22nd edition of The ARRL Antenna Book were also released to the printer.

Official Observer Desk: ARRL Field and Regulatory Correspondent Chuck Skolaut, K0BOG, handled complaints regarding operations on 14.313 and 7.213 MHz. He received a report detailing an “unusual CW beacon” on 7.040 MHz.
