Indian Institute of Hams Honors Three Radio Amateurs for Flood Aid
The Indians Institute of Hams (IIH) has recognized three Amateur Radio operators from Bangalore for their efforts to support emergency communication in the wake of the Uttarakhand flooding. The IIH honored Rahul Ravishankar, VU3HBT; Vishwas Krishnamurthy, VU3HVD, and Girish Doss, VU3GDS, with certificates of excellence. According to a report in The Hindu, they were among the first hams to reach Uttarakhand and establish a communication link from remote areas. The article quotes Rahul, “On establishing communication network, we would relay the message to the master controls at Dehra Dun, and the message in turn would be passed on to the district administration. The volunteers of Bharat Scouts and Guides would then reach out to the stranded persons in remote places.” Doss and Rahul also volunteered their services following the earthquake in Gujarat in 2001 and the catastrophic tsunami in 2004. Founded in 1992, the Indian Institute of Hams promotes Amateur Radio as a scientific hobby and radio sport and serves as a volunteer force during disasters and emergencies. [IIH logo]
