Surfin’: Take a Ride on the Wayback Radio Machine

09/16/2011

This week, Surfin’ wanders the Internet wondering where to find more radio history.

History is relative. One generation’s experience is history to the next generation (and ancient history to the third generation).

Having survived 60 spins around that big star in the center of the solar system, I realized recently that the experiences of my youth are ancient history to my 20-something daughter.

Referring to my penchant for watching the film Woodstock on occasion, she wrote in her blog, “Most people try to relive their youth when they get older, even if it’s only in their minds.”

I felt like Methuselah after reading that and hesitated writing about the cool website I recently discovered while researching some radio history.

So, call me “Methuselah.”

Jerry Berg and John Herkimer, WB2LNY, host On the Shortwaves.com, which is “devoted primarily to the history of shortwave broadcasting and the shortwave broadcast DXing hobby.”

The website’s DX History page is the repository of mass quantities of radio history. So much so that they had to subdivide it to make it more manageable. The subdivisions include Station, Recordings, SWLing & DXing, Clubs & Publications, Lists, Logs, Guides & Columns, QSLs & Other Station Memorabilia, Equipment & Advertising, Literature & Humor, People, Philately, POW Monitoring and General Radio History.

Methuselah died and went to heaven! I don’t know how I missed this website in the past, but I’m glad I found it. And I plan on spending many hours, if not days, examining its contents.

If you can't get enough here, the website also has a very comprehensive page of links to other websites where you can find even more radio history.

Until next time, keep on surfin’!

Editor’s note: Stan Horzepa, WA1LOU, owns radios that are older than his daughter, not to mention himself. To contact Stan, send e-mail or add comments to the WA1LOU blog.
