The occasion is a demonstration of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory, in a flyover for the Liberty Science Center in Liberty Park, New Jersey. The center expects some 600 students from the Summit Middle School in Summit, New Jersey, who will camp there overnight. Center officials invited members of the United Astronomy Club of New Jersey, some of whom are also radio amateurs, according to Al Tencza, NX2Q. The station will be set up at the science center and will sign W2LS (on loan from licensee Bill Savell), from 2200 October 13 to 0330 UTC on the 14th, on the 20, 15, and 10 meter bands on SSB as well as locally on 6 and 2 meters. The demonstration also will be carried live on local television Channel 13. The airborne observatory is operated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and is used to demonstrate the use of airborne telescopes, in both the infrared and visible spectrum.
